Canada fur trade overview

Canada’s fur trade in 2023 continued to centre on exporting raw furskins, with nearly $30 million in exports—mostly to the USA—and just $2 million in imports.

Much of this raw fur comes from Canada’s wild fur industry, with animals trapped and sold through auction houses like Fur Harvesters Auction Inc., one of the world’s last major wild fur auctioneers. In contrast, Canada imported far more processed furs and fur clothing than it exported, particularly from China and Italy.

These trade figures highlight a clear pattern: Canada is a major supplier of raw wild fur but depends heavily on other countries to process and manufacture fur products.
