Finland fur trade overview
Finland continues to be a major driver of the global fur trade, exporting over $329 million worth of raw furskins in 2023—more than any other EU country.
While domestic support for fur farming is declining and many EU states have banned the practice altogether, Finland remains a central exporter, with most of its pelts going to low-cost processing hubs like Cambodia.
Imports of fur garments and processed skins are minimal, showing that Finland's role is focused on producing and exporting raw animal pelts, not domestic consumption. Almost all of this trade is channelled through Finland-based Saga Furs, Europe’s only major fur auction house, which plays a key role in supplying pelts to markets worldwide.
As the EU debates whether to take stronger action against fur farming, Finland’s ongoing activity highlights the need for EU-wide regulation to prevent countries from propping up an industry increasingly rejected by the public.
